TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held a bilateral meeting in Cairo on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, during which they agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, particularly in education and culture.
According to the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries. Prabowo expressed his gratitude to Egypt for supporting approximately 15,000 Indonesian students, particularly those pursuing studies at Al-Azhar University.
Prabowo expressed Indonesia's interest in deepening collaboration with Egypt and Al-Azhar University in advancing religious education and fostering regional harmony.
President el-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to expanding cooperation with Indonesia across various sectors. He assured that the Egyptian government would fully support Indonesian students studying in Egypt.
"We are ready to support and provide necessary facilities as requested by Indonesia," el-Sisi stated.
Both leaders also highlighted the advantages of cultural exchanges in promoting friendship and strengthening people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Egypt.
Prabowo proposed introducing pencak silat, an Indonesian martial art, as an official sport in Egypt and establishing the Egyptian Pencak Silat Association (EPSA).
"I have received reports that approximately 4,000 young Egyptians have already begun learning pencak silat," President Prabowo noted.
Prabowo is currently in Cairo, Egypt, where he is attending the D-8 Summit from December 17-19, 2024, and engaging in bilateral meetings with other world leaders.
