TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the investments to construct 1 million housing units in Indonesia as part of the Prabowo-led 3 million housing program.
The MoU was signed between Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait and Secretary General of the Qatar Royal Family Council Sheikh Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Thani, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
“We put hope on the 1 million housing. I have previously assigned Deputy Minister Fahri Hamzah to meet [Qatar’s government] abroad, and today, we are witnessing the result of a long process by Hashim [Djojohadikusumo] as the task force chair, along with his staff and Fahri Hamzah,” said Maruarar at the Merdeka Palace.
The MoU on Qatar’s investment, the minister said, is a government-to-government cooperation. After inking the agreement, Maruarar said his ministry is working to prepare the required land.
Maruarar said his ministry works with the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir to prepare the land acquired from PT KAI to Perum Perumnas. The Ministry of State Secretary also helped with the land available in Kemayoran and Senayan. The Ministry of Finance, through the Directorate General of State Assets, has also prepared land in Kalibata for the housing program.
“The [Qatari] Sheikh will survey the locations, in Kemayoran, around Senayan and Kalibata,” he said.
The minister said Qatar is far from the only investor keen on funding the 3 million housing units program. not the only investor who will invest in housing. According to him, President Prabowo Subianto received a report from Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, Minister of Investment and Downstream, that numerous investors are entering Indonesia to accelerate the housing program.
“The target is lower middle class Indonesians, and we are prioritizing investors for urban areas,” he said. “We were given a target of 3 million housing units to build, and in 2 months and 20 days, we have built over 40,000.”
Previously, Fahri Hamzah revealed that Qatar has committed to build 1 million houses in Indonesia to support President Prabowo Subianto's program. He explained that the housing units developed by Qatar will prioritize vertical development in the cities.
