TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto reassured that Indonesia will not join any military pact. The head of state claimed he respected every nation and did not wish for conflicts to arise.
The president conveyed the statement while addressing Indonesian students at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, December 18.
“I will maintain the position that Indonesia is a country that respects and honors other nations and has no intention to be involved in any conflicts or join any military pact,” he said, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Thursday, December 19.
Prabowo said his position aligned with his predecessors. Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, along with former Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser, initiated the non-aligned movement.
“The non-aligned movement is intended to unite developing countries that have no desire to join the Western or Eastern blocs. The movement took the central stage and respects every country, nation, and race,” said Prabowo. “That’s what our leaders believed at the time.”
According to Prabowo, Indonesia will always strive for peace during every conflict. Indonesia prioritizes discussion to resolve problems. “We will always advise to take a middle ground, collaboration, and cooperation instead of a conflict. That’s the position I will take, not only for foreign politics, but politics I’m running at home,” he said.
