TEMPO.CO, JakartaWhen it comes to the United Kingdom (U.K.), iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, also referred to as the Elizabeth Tower, and London Bridge may pop up in mind, especially for globetrotters. Meanwhile, others may think of the British Royal Family, which is a prominent force within the country.

As some of you know, the British Royal Family is one of the oldest monarchies in the world, with a history dating back to the 10th century. The royal lifestyle, often perceived as glamorous, attracts a significant number of enthusiasts. Regardless, an equally interesting subject for discussion is the fortune the British Royal Family holds.

It is quite difficult to determine the precise value of their assets, particularly given the vast array of holdings. Nevertheless, Investopedia, InStyle, and CBS News provide a glimpse into the British Royal Family’s net worth. Keep scrolling to learn more.

The British Royal Family’s Net Worth

According to Forbes’ calculation, the current net worth of the British Royal Family stands at approximately US$28 billion. This huge number is relatively smaller than that of the world’s wealthiest family. It’s the Al Nahyan family taking the crown with a staggering US$305 billion of wealth, Investopedia says.

Still, the Royal Family remains undeniably significant in terms of wealth. For more, let’s take a closer look at some of the family’s valuable assets.

1. The Firm

As Cosmopolitan explains, the term "The Firm" refers to the entire royal operation. This is not limited to the Windsors but comprises other entities, including heads of households, gardeners, servants, and others contributing to running the palace.

As mentioned earlier, the current value of the Firm is estimated to be approximately US$28 billion.

2. Queen Elizabeth’s Net Worth

As the second-longest reigning monarch in history, occupying the throne for around 70 years and 127 days, NPR says, Queen Elizabeth II’s wealth was approximately US$500 million in 2022. Her assets include Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle.

3. King Charles’ Net Worth

The current UK’s crown amasses a fortune of US$772 million. He received an inheritance of US$500 million from his late mother. Similarly, he made a good US$22.5 million from his divorce with Princess Diana. King Charles' assets reportedly include a diverse portfolio of holdings, comprising estates, jewelry, automobiles, and artwork.

4. The Crown Estate

The Crown Estate manages the Royal Family’s collective properties, which largely contribute to the monarchy’s immense wealth. Valued at US$20.5 billion, the revenue generated—which reached US$410 million by the end of the fiscal year 2022—will be allocated to the British government in return for a Sovereign Grant from British taxpayers.

When it comes to the Royal Family’s properties, the Duchy of Cornwall and the Duchy of Lancaster are among the two. Situated in southwest England, the Duchy of Cornwall, now inherited by Prince William, was valued at US$32 million in 2022.

On the other hand, the Duchy of Lancaster remains a possession of King Charles. The property’s operating profit revealed a figure of US$31 million in the fiscal year of 2022, and it is significantly attributed to the monarch’s net worth.

5. Crown Jewels

The British Royal Family’s net worth extends beyond properties. Much like other monarchs, gems, particularly crown jewels, are among the family’s major sources of wealth.

These precious ones, with a history tracing back to 1660, encompass a collection of jewelry, crowns, scepters, and other accessories, such as the Imperial State Crown and the Cartier Halo Tiara.

This even includes a piece that has been the subject of considerable controversy. It was the 1849 Koh-i-Noor diamond, apparently obtained from the East India Trading Company. However, whether it was a gift or stolen remains up for debate.

6. The Buckingham Palace

Besides a place where members of the Royal Family greet the crowds, Buckingham Palace runs as the administrative offices of the United Kingdom’s monarch. Erected in the early 18th century, the value of this palace is US$4.9 billion.
